In addition to addressing immediate infrastructure needs, the program seeks to incorporate ongoing efforts to rebuild existing facilities. It leverages forecast and other data gathered as part of the ongoing master planning process. This strategic approach positions VIPA to access federal emergency funds resulting from recent hurricanes and potentially allocate FAA funds as well. Furthermore, the “New Vision” program aims to develop a comprehensive roadmap for the future. It’s not merely about restoring facilities to their previous state but about setting a trajectory for long-term growth and sustainability. By integrating various elements such as infrastructure improvements, regional positioning, and access to funding sources, VIPA aims to ensure that the airport not only recovers from recent setbacks but emerges stronger and more resilient for the future.
In a joint initiative with Kimley Horn, P&P spearheaded a collaborative endeavor, assembling a diverse team of consultants with expertise in architecture, engineering, fire protection, acoustics, lighting design, signage, passenger flow simulation modeling, and various other fields. This collective effort operated under a unified design vision, harnessing the collective strengths and perspectives of each specialized consultant to achieve a comprehensive and cohesive approach to the project.
Undertaking a phased expansion while ensuring uninterrupted airport operations presents a significant challenge. The collaborative effort between VIPA and Perez and Perez at Cyril E. King International Airport (STT) in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, addressed this challenge head-on with the “New Vision” initiative. This strategic undertaking prioritized crucial infrastructure improvements to restore functionality while positioning STT as a top-tier passenger hub in the Caribbean. The design team successfully modified the existing terminal structure, introducing a secondary column system that facilitates the construction of a second-floor area. This additional space is thoughtfully utilized for the development of concession areas, passenger waiting halls, 10 new passenger boarding bridges, and arrival sterile corridors that seamlessly connect to the new CBP and inspection areas.
